'생각자람 어린이 도서관' Think-Grow Children’s Library
원주에 위치한 ‘생각자람 어린이 도서관’은 기부채납을 통해 조성된 시립시설이다. 기부채납의 사업유형의 특징상 투자사와 채납기관간의 상충하는 관점의 차이를 효과적으로 극복하는 건축적 해법을 찾는 것으로부터 프로젝트는 시작되었다. 주어진 예산안에 의미 있는 양질의 공간을 만드는 건축적인 연구가 선행되어야 한다 생각했다.
공간전체의 주제가 될 수 있는 천창과 자연광으로 충만한 공간구조를 조성함으로써 이 시설에 체류하는 모든 이 에게 감성 충만한 공간을 사유할 수 있도록 계획하였다. 이는 의장적인 요소의 디자인에 앞서 큰 주제가 되어줌으로써 자연스러운 의도의 디자인으로 발현되었다. 천창을 통해 유입되는 자연광과 그에 상응하는 따뜻한 소재, 절제된 컬러 마감이 어우러져 공간 전체에 은은하고 정서적인 풍경을 만들어낸다. 낮은 시선의 가구와 유기적인 동선, 아날로그 서가와 디지털 콘텐츠가 공존하는 환경은 사용자의 감각적 몰입을 유도하며, 특히 가족 단위의 사용자가 함께 머무르고 책을 읽는 모습은 가장 인상적인 장면 중 하나라고 생각한다.
이러한 풍경은 도서관을 단순한 개발의 결과물로 한정하지 않고, 공간을 통해 지역의 문화적 흐름과 공동체적 경험이 자연스럽게 형성되도록 유도한다. 도시 안에서 공공 공간이 어떻게 사람과 사람, 세대와 세대를 잇는지를 보여주는 구조로 작동하며, 이는 결과적으로 디벨로퍼가 도시와 맺는 관계의 깊이를 다시 생각하게 한다.

Think-Grow Children’s Library in Wonju is a public facility established through a donation in kind.
The project began with the challenge of addressing the inherent tensions of this development model—bridging the differing perspectives between the investor and the municipal authority. Within the given budget, the foremost priority was not decorative form, but an architectural inquiry into how to create meaningful, high-quality space.
At the heart of this inquiry was the idea of a spatial structure filled with natural light through skylights. More than a visual gesture, this concept became the overarching theme that guided the design, shaping a space where every visitor could experience an atmosphere of emotional depth and contemplation. The influx of daylight, paired with warm materials and restrained color finishes, weaves a subtle yet evocative ambience throughout the library.
Low-sighted furniture, organic circulation, and the coexistence of analog bookshelves with digital content create an environment that invites sensory immersion. Among the many scenes within, perhaps the most memorable is that of families reading together, inhabiting the space with a quiet intimacy.
This landscape positions the library not merely as a product of development, but as a cultural catalyst for the community—an environment where shared experiences naturally unfold. It demonstrates how public spaces within the city can connect people to people, and generations to generations. Ultimately, it prompts the developer to reconsider the depth of their relationship with the city itself.
