사계절의 이야기를 담아내는 감성 스테이. 사담재는 문화와 전통, 그리고 오랜 역사를 품은 문경에 자리한다. 감성 스테이를 개발하는 과정에서 우리는 이 지역이 지닌 고유한 매력을 온전히 담아내는 것이 건축과 공간디자인의 핵심 방향이라고 판단했다. 지역의 역사적·문화적 특성을 반영하며, 전통적 고유성을 체감할 수 있는 체류 경험을 제공하고자 했다.
건축 배치는 전통건축의 사랑채와 안채 구성을 모티브로 삼아 공용공간과 숙박공간을 분리하는 방식으로 계획했다. 마당을 모티프로 한 환대 공간을 중심에 두고 로비, 레스토랑,
그리고 문경의 차문화를 경험할 수 있는 다양한 부대공간을 배치했다. 각각의 공간은 마당을 향해 열려 있어, 시선과 동선이 머물고 흐르며 공간의 풍요로움을 자연스럽게 느끼도록 설계하였다. 10개의 ‘채’로 구성된 숙박동은 중정(中庭)을 중심으로 배치하였다. 외부에서 중정을 거쳐 객실로 이어지는 회랑, 하늘을 온전히 받아들이는 수공(水工)의 장면은 전통건축에서 느껴지는 서정성과 사색적 경험을 현대적으로 재해석한 요소들이다. 지붕의 형태와 재료는 한국 건축의 미감을 현대적으로 풀어낸 것으로, 넓게 펼쳐진 처마의 선과 간결한 윤곽을 통해 한국적 분위기를 절제된 방식으로 표현하였다. 또한 흙, 콘크리트, 질박한 나무 소재를 조합하여 자연친화적이면서도 전통적인 분위기를 구현하였다.
객실 공간은 좌식 문화를 기반으로 한 비례와 스케일을 따르고, ‘기둥과 보’라는 전통건축의 구조적 언어를 모티프로 삼아 고즈넉하고 평온한 주거 정서를 담아내고자 했다. 모든 객실에는 담장으로 둘러싸인 마당과 한국적인 조경, SPA 공간을 계획했으며, 내부 공간과 확장된 툇마루에서 자연을 온전히 누릴 수 있는 웰니스 경험을 제공한다.
사담재는 지역성과 전통성을 명확한 공간 주제로 삼아 디자인한 스테이이지만, 이 공간의 더 큰 가치는 ‘전통 문화의 교류’에 있다. 문경 지역에는 다양한 무형문화재와 장인 문화가 존재한다. 사담재가 이들의 문화를 이어주고 확장하는 ‘사랑채’와 같은 역할을 하길 기대한다. 단순히 머무르고 쉬는 공간을 넘어, 역사·문화·자연이 교류하는 지속가능한 플랫폼으로 운영되기를 바란다.
Sadamjae: Four Seasons, Four Stories
四: Four Seasons, 談: Stories A soulful stay capturing the narrative of the seasons.
Located in Mungyeong—a city rich in tradition and history—Sadamjae was designed to embody the region's unique heritage. Our architectural vision focused on creating a space where guests could tangibly experience historical authenticity through modern design.
The layout draws inspiration from the traditional Sarang-chae (guest house) and An-chae (inner house), naturally separating communal and private areas. At its heart lies a welcoming Madang (courtyard) surrounded by a lobby, a restaurant, and dedicated spaces for Mungyeong’s tea culture. Each area opens toward this central courtyard, allowing sightlines and movement to flow seamlessly.
Ten guest units, or Chae, are arranged around a central Jungjeong (inner court). Corridors leading from the exterior and serene water features reflecting the sky offer a modern reinterpretation of the contemplative lyricism found in traditional Korean architecture.
The rooflines and materials reflect a restrained Korean aesthetic. Wide eaves and clean silhouettes, combined with earth, concrete, and rustic wood, create an eco-friendly yet timeless atmosphere. The interiors follow the proportions of Jwasik (floor-seated) culture, using traditional "post and beam" structures to evoke a sense of peaceful dwelling. Each room features a private walled garden and a spa, offering a wellness experience that extends from the Toetmaru (veranda) into nature.
Beyond being a place of rest, Sadamjae is a "Sarang-chae" for the modern era—a platform where Mungyeong’s intangible cultural heritage and craftsmanship meet. We hope it serves as a sustainable bridge where history, culture, and nature continuously interact.
