장소가 주는 치유와 영감의 웰리스 리조트 PARK ROCHE
파크로쉬는 평창동계올림픽 알파인 스키장 시설이 위치한 강원도 정선군 가리왕산 국립공원의 숙암리(숙암리)에 위치한다. ‘숙암’이라는 지명은 옛 맥국의 갈왕이 고된 전쟁을 피하여 정선지역에 머물며 암석 밑에서 하룻밤을 유숙하고 숙면을 취했다 한 데서 유래되었다고 한다. 지친 나그네를 품어주었던 큰 바위,이 이야기가 장소의 정체성을 품은 휄리스 리조트 파크로쉬의 시작이었다. 디자인의 지배적인 키워드는 지역성과 장소성이다. 파크로쉬의 이름에도 표현된 숙암리의 바위가 주제가 되어 다양한 시퀀스로 표현하였다. 이를 통해 장소에서 느낄 수 있는 철학과 영감을 주는 웰리스의 인사이트가 분명 모두에게 전달될 것이라 확신했다.
지하로 진입하는 메인 로비공간은 사이트에서 직접 채석한 석재를 활용하여 주변과의 동화를 계획하였다. 정선의 자작나무 숲, 다듬어지지 않은 바위의 감성과 벽난로의 따스한 온기. 빛을 머금은 나무 격자 아래 안락감이 충만한 환대의 공간은 첩첩산중의 웰리스 리조트의 철학을 함축한다. 파크로쉬는 자연을 통한 마음치유라는 리조트의 정체성으로부터 모든 시설들이 계획되었다. 특히 스파시설은 오대천과 두타산 조망이 가능한 곳에 탕을 배치하여, 자연과 오롯이 마주하는 사우나 구조를 형성하였다. 사계절이용 가능한 프라이빗 자쿠지는 야외에 설치하여 자연에 적극적으로 다가가려는 계획의 일환이었다.
객실은 정선 천혜의 자연경관에 압도된다. 오대천과 가리왕산의 산새를 만끽할 수 있는 배치가 객실디자인의 최우선 과제였다. 외부경관을 오롯이 실내로 끌어들이기 위한 비움의 디자인이 계획되었다. 최대한 높은 공간감을 확보하기 위해 천정을 그대로 노출하는 이례적인 방식을 채택하였으며, 공간의 볼륨을 통해 목재 대들보 오브제가 관통하는 한국적인 공간감을 계획하였다. 공간을 유기적으로 가르는 석재 오브제는 ‘숙암’으로부터의 영감에 기인한다. 숙면을 위한 최적의 공간을 지향하는 리조트의 철학과 ‘숙암’의 이야기로 파크로쉬의 디자인을 담아내고자 했다.
파크로쉬의 디자인은 국내에서 처음 시도되는 웰리스 컨셉을 정립하고 프로그램을 검증해 나가는 과정속에 많은 도전과 어려움이 있었다. 이를 이해해나가는 복합적인 과정을 통해 리조트를 가는 것만으로도 충분한 여행의 목적이 될 수 있는 진정성 있는 공간을 만들고 싶었다. 우리의 작업 통해 이곳을 이용하는 모든 이 에게 쉼에 대한 영감과 작은 여운의 온기가 전달될 수 있다면 더 없이 보람 될 것이다.
A Wellness Resort of Healing and Inspiration Rooted in Place
PARK ROCHE is located in Sukam-ri, within the Gariwangsan National Park in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon Province—home to the alpine skiing venue of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. The place name “Sukam” originates from an ancient legend: Galwang, king of the Maek tribe, once sought refuge in this region to escape relentless warfare. Resting beneath a large rock for the night, he found deep and peaceful sleep, and the place came to be known as Sukam, meaning “the rock of rest.” The great rock that once embraced a weary traveler became the narrative origin of PARK ROCHE—a wellness resort that carries the spirit and identity of its place.
The dominant design keywords are regionality and placeness. The rock of Sukam-ri, embedded in the very name of PARK ROCHE, became the central motif and was interpreted through a series of spatial sequences. Through this approach, we sought to clearly convey the philosophy of the place and the wellness insights drawn from it, offering visitors a sense of inspiration rooted in the landscape itself.
The main lobby, accessed via a descent below ground level, was designed to harmonize with its surroundings through the use of stone quarried directly from the site. The birch forests of Jeongseon, the raw texture of unrefined rock, and the gentle warmth of a fireplace come together to form a welcoming space. Beneath a softly illuminated wooden lattice ceiling, the lobby exudes comfort and calm—an embodiment of the philosophy of a wellness resort nestled deep within the mountains.
PARK ROCHE was planned entirely around its core identity: healing the mind through nature. In particular, the spa facilities were carefully positioned to offer panoramic views of Odaecheon Stream and Duta Mountain, creating a sauna experience that allows guests to face nature in its purest form. Private jacuzzis, usable throughout all four seasons, were installed outdoors as part of an active strategy to bring guests closer to the natural environment.
The guest rooms are immersed in the breathtaking natural scenery of Jeongseon. Their layout prioritizes uninterrupted views of Odaecheon Stream and the ridgelines of Mount Gariwangsan. A design of intentional emptiness was employed to draw the exterior landscape fully into the interior space. To maximize spatial openness, the ceiling structure was left exposed—an unconventional approach—allowing the volume of the room to be defined by large wooden beams that evoke a distinctly Korean sense of space. Stone objects that organically divide the interior are inspired by the concept of “Sukam,” reinforcing the narrative of rest beneath rock. Through this interplay of story and design, PARK ROCHE seeks to embody its philosophy of creating the optimal environment for deep and restorative sleep.
Establishing and validating Korea’s first comprehensive wellness resort concept presented numerous challenges throughout the design process. Yet through this complex and exploratory journey, our goal was to create an authentic destination—one where the act of visiting alone becomes a meaningful journey in itself. If our work can offer every guest a moment of true rest, along with a lingering warmth and inspiration long after their stay, it would be the greatest reward of all.
