사계절의 이야기를 담아내는 감성 스테이
사담재가 위치한 문경이라는 지역은 깊은 산자락 끝에 고요함이 깃든 장소이며, 오랜 세월 지역의 역사적·문화적 가치를 품은 지역이기도하다.
스테이의 정체성을 고민하는 과정에서 우리는 장소가 지닌 고유한 가치를 자연스럽게 담아내는 것이 건축과 공간디자인의 순리적인 방향이라 생각했다.
스테이로써 문경의 고요함이 깃든 ‘비어있음’을 온전히 느끼는 공간, 여백의 공간속에 머무르는 이에게 스스로의 감각을 채워갈 수 있는 여지의 공간을 제공하는 것. 그리고 여백 안에 시간과 계절의 흐름을 체험하는 장소. 이 공간속의 시간의 흐름도 장소의 정서와 함께 고요하게 흐르며 온전히 머무름에 몰입할 수 있는 경험을 제공하고자 했다.
또한 스테이 본연의 목적과 더불어 지역과 호흡하는 커뮤니티로서의 역할과 가능성에 대해 주목했다. 문경 지역에는 다양한 무형 문화재와 장인 문화가 존재한다. 사담재를 방문하는 이들에게 지역의 문화체험을 제공하고 정신을 교류하는 ‘사랑채’와 같은 장소가 될 수 있다고 생각했다.
경계의 확장을 통해 풍경과 하나 되는 공간
사담재의 건축 배치는 전통 한옥의 안채와 사랑채 구조에서 영감을 받아 지역의 문화적 컨텐츠를 체험하는 공용 공간과 숙박 공간을 자연스럽게 분리 계획하였다. 공간의 시작에는 하늘을 품은 수공간의 마당이 자리하며, 그 주위로 로비와 로컬 푸드를 즐길 수 있는 레스토랑, 문경의 차 문화를 경험할 수 있는 커뮤니티 공간들이 유기적으로 펼쳐진다. 마당을 중심으로 다양한 문화적 체험이 중첩될 수 있는 구조이며 문경의 깊이 있는 문화 컨텐츠가 지속적으로 살아 숨 쉬는 공간 플렛폼으로 활용될 수 있도록 계획하였다.
객실의 공간영역으로 들어서면 하늘을 투영하는 고요한 수공간을 회랑을 통해 사색하듯 즐길 수 있는 동선으로 진입하게 된다. 10개의 객실(채)은 중정(中庭)과 회랑을 중심으로 여유로이 배치하여, 고즈넉한 건축적 여백 속에 아늑하고 고요함을 제공하는 공간으로의 몰입을 계획하였다.
사담재의 공간은 유기적인 흐름 속에 서로 자연스레 연결된 공간체험을 유도한다. 문을 열고 들어서면 마루와 방, 툇마루와 마당이 자연스럽게 이어지며 내부와 외부의 경계는 희미해진다. 외부의 풍경이 차경이 되어 내부의 공간과 끊임없이 호흡한다.
모든 공간은 좌식 문화에서 느껴지는 평온한 공간감을 계획하였고, 전통적인 '기둥과 보'구조로 이루어진 한옥의 공간미를 통해 안정감과 깊이 있는 평온함을 불러일으킨다. 객실에 머무르며 후정을 관조하는 배치를 통해 여백의 공간미와 사계절의 풍경과 시간을 담아내기에 오롯이 사색에 몰입할 수 있는 구조라 할 수 있다.
이곳에는 시선을 자극하는 인위적인 색채가 배제되어 있다. 질빅한 질감의 무채색 벽면, 깊은 있는 물성의 목재, 발걸음에 차분하게 안착 되는 석재의 투박함. 등 소재 고유의 뉘앙스가 곧 공간의 느낌이 된다. 한지를 통해 스며드는 볕을 통해 평온함을 만끽하는 차분한 공간감 속 진정한 사색을 즐길 수 있는 오감의 웰니스 공간으로 계획했다.
진정성이 지속되는 스테이를 향하여
사담재를 만들어 오는 긴 여정 끝에 공간과 장소의 본질에 대해 다시금 생각해 보면, 이 공간의 본연의 가치는 한옥의 형태나 재료의 스타일에 기인하지 않는다. 각박한 작금의 시대에 서로에게 필요한 정서적 여백을 제공하는 공간이며, 자신에게 집중하는 시간의 소비 방식을 제안하는 스테이, 우리에게 다르게 머무는 방식을 제안하는 공간이다.
고즈넉한 공간의 정서 속에 오롯이 사색에 몰입할 수 있는 체험을 제공하는 스테이로 서의 역할, 장소의 전통과 특별함을 오감으로 체험하며 지역과 호흡하는 스테이로서의 지속성이 오랫동안 살아 숨 쉬는 사담재의 앞날을 흐뭇하게 상상해본다. ‘시간이 지나도 깊은 여운을 남길 수 있는 진정성이 소통되는 공간으로.’
Sadamjae: A Moody Stay Embracing the Stories of the Four Seasons
Mungyeong, the home of Sadamjae, is a place where tranquility rests at the edge of a deep mountain range—a region that has long held profound historical and cultural value.
In defining the identity of this stay, we believed that the most natural direction for its architecture and spatial design was to intuitively embrace the inherent values of the land. Our vision was to create a space where one can fully experience the "emptiness" infused with Mungyeong’s tranquility. It is a place of margin, offering guests the room to gently refill their own senses, and a venue to witness the passage of time and the shifting of seasons. We wished for time within this space to flow as serenely as the spirit of the land itself, providing an experience of absolute immersion in the stay.
Furthermore, alongside its primary purpose as a getaway, we focused on its potential role as a community that breathes in tandem with the region. Mungyeong boasts a rich tapestry of intangible cultural heritage and master craftsmanship. We envisioned Sadamjae as a contemporary Sarangchae (a traditional guest house for cultural and intellectual exchange), where visitors can experience local culture and engage in a soulful dialogue.
Becoming One with the Landscape Through the Expansion of Boundaries
The architectural layout of Sadamjae draws inspiration from the traditional Hanok structure of the Anchae (main quarters) and Sarangchae (guest quarters), naturally separating the public spaces for local cultural experiences from the private lodging areas. The journey begins at a courtyard featuring a water mirror that embraces the sky. Branching out organically around it are the lobby, a restaurant celebrating local culinary treasures, and community spaces dedicated to experiencing Mungyeong's rich tea culture. With the courtyard at its heart, the structure allows diverse cultural experiences to overlap, designed to function as a living platform where Mungyeong's deep cultural narratives continuously breathe.
As you step into the residential zone, the corridor guides you into a meditative path, offering views of a serene, sky-reflecting water feature. The ten private guest rooms (Chae) are spaced generously around a central courtyard and cloister, intentionally crafted to immerse guests in cozy tranquility within a quiet architectural margin.
The spaces within Sadamjae invite an organic flow of interconnected experiences. Upon opening the door, the wooden porch (Maru), the room, the narrow veranda (Toetmaru), and the courtyard blend seamlessly, blurring the boundaries between inside and out. The surrounding landscape becomes a borrowed scenery (Chakyung), breathing continuously with the interior.
Every area is designed to evoke the peaceful sense of scale unique to traditional floor-sitting (Jwasik) culture. The structural beauty of the traditional "post-and-beam" Hanok framework instills a sense of stability and profound calm. The layout encourages guests to quietly contemplate the rear garden from their rooms—a structure perfectly tailored for deep meditation, capturing the aesthetic of empty space alongside the texture of the four seasons.
Artificial, stimulating colors have been entirely excluded. The raw texture of monochromatic walls, the deep tactility of timber, and the rustic grounding of stone beneath one's feet—the inherent nuances of these materials become the very essence of the space. Combined with the sunlight filtering softly through traditional Korean paper (Hanji), the atmosphere becomes a wellness sanctuary for all five senses, allowing for true, uninterrupted contemplation.
Toward a Stay of Lasting Authenticity
Looking back at the essence of space and place at the end of this long journey of creating Sadamjae, the true value of this sanctuary does not stem merely from the form of a Hanok or the style of its materials. In today's relentless world, it is a space that offers the emotional breathing room we all crave—a stay that proposes a different way of spending time focusing on oneself, and a place that invites us to dwell differently.
We fondly imagine the future of Sadamjae: a place that continuously breathes as a stay providing an immersive experience of solitude amidst serene sentiments, and a sanctuary that harmonizes with the region by engaging all five senses with local traditions.
